Workshop | Closing the loop of capital equipment in the hospital

Wednesday 10 October, 09:00-11:00

A pre-conference workshop organised and sponsored by Philips

You are invited

Philips would like to invite asset managers and procurement professionals from healthcare institutions to their pre-conference workshop to hear inspiring case studies of closing the loop of capital equipment in the hospital. Philips would also like input from Capital equipment manufacturers, to provide their perspective of barriers to reaching a more circular approach to capital assets in healthcare.

About the workshop

Capital equipment, i.e. assets exceeding €5 000 in value covers a considerable range of products found in hospitals and healthcare facilities - from photocopiers or automated beds to MRI scanners, with many products in between.

There is an uncaptured opportunity to significantly reduce costs and environmental impact by working with manufacturers of such capital equipment, helping them to take back their products at a moment of equipment upgrade or renewal.

By extending the manufacturers’ role towards closing the material loop, manufacturers are put in a position to develop smart equipment life-cycle strategies that include recycling, parts-harvesting, refurbishment, and equipment maintenance.

By focussing on the preservation of asset value, both hospitals and manufacturers can save costs and avoid negative environmental impacts of their capital equipment.

In this collaborative workshop participants will hear about concrete case examples of closing the loop both in the healthcare sector and other industries. The main question that will be explored together is How do we overcome existing barriers that prevent widespread adoption of this model? From the manufacturer side, these barriers are often found in fully assessing the economic value of a return, the limited visibility of outstanding assets hampering installed base management, and internal organisational barriers. From the user point of view, barriers exist in developing appropriate procurement processes, implementing shared asset management approaches with manufacturers, and addressing internal organisational constraints.
